Partners/Organizations
In Michigan, a variety of economic development partners work together in cooperation with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to give businesses the Upper Hand.
Interlocal Partnerships
An Interlocal Partnership is a formal agreement for economic development that already exists between the state and local units of government. It allows those local economic development corporations to appoint a representative to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation Board. The Board evaluates the performance of the MEDC and reviews the acts of the MEDC Executive Committee.
Corporate Partnerships
The MEDC recognizes and appreciates that there are numerous other types of economic development agencies that also work very closely in partnership with the MEDC. These corporate partners include various local agencies, utilities, and other types of organizations. To recognize these other partnerships, the Cooperation Agreement was developed. The Cooperation Agreement is an informal, non-binding contract between the MEDC and a participating local economic development entity to cooperate and assist each other in implementing economic development strategies that will promote economic growth in the local agency’s jurisdiction.
Chambers of Commerce
In some areas of the state, the local chamber of commerce is the primary agency for local economic development. Chambers of commerce are usually formed by groups of local businesses to represent their needs and to protect their interests.
Convention and Visitors Bureaus
Convention and Visitors Bureaus (CVBs) are not-for-profit organizations charged with representing a specific destination and helping the long-term development of communities through a travel and tourism strategy. CVBs are usually membership organizations bringing together businesses that rely on tourism and meetings for revenue.
Other Partners
Some organizations do not fit easily under the above categories. These include super-regional organizations, MEDC or state-funded bodies with a narrow business focus and other such organizations.
